TREES & SHRUBS
When the weather and soil are favourable, continue to plant deciduous trees and shrubs.
Check that newly planted standard trees have not become loosened in the soil, and tread down where necessary.
tar-oil winter-wash will remove moss and lichen from tree trunks, but protect nearby plants while the spraying is carried out.
Propagation
In the open. Separate rooted suckers of poplar from the parent plant, and re-plant them in their permanent positions.
Under glass. Sow seeds of spartium ¼in. deep in pots of sandy peat and place in a propagating frame at a temperature of 18ºC (64ºF).
Pot seedlings of spartium singly as soon as they are large enough to handle, then transplant in late May or early June.
Pruning.
Prune such shrubs as callicarpa, Campsis radicans, spiraea and tamarisk hard back by cutting away the previous year's growth to within a few inches of old wood.
This will encourage new and vigorous shoots to develop.
Prune summer- flowering varieties of clematis hard back, either to 12in. above ground, or to within two buds on young growth.
Prune after flowering. Cut back all the shoots that have just flowered of chimonanthus and Jasminum nudiflorum (winter jasmine); also thin out old, damaged and weak wood of Jasminum officinale.
Remove inward-growing branches of crab apples to keep the centres of the trees open.
Thin climbers such as celastrus and solanum by removing any weak growths, and shorten or pinch out tips of main shoots.
