PATIOS & TOWN GARDENS
Unless it is freezing or the soil is wet and sticky, deciduous shrubs and trees can be planted in containers this month to provide a permanent display.
Plants for a patio. When selecting plants for a patio, bear in mind that climbers can provide large areas of colour, and will hide drab walls, without occupying any more space than low-growing subjects.
Some are self-clinging but most need support in the form of wires, trellis or mesh.
Choose plants to suit the aspect. Remember that climbers trained against walls fences will receive light on the side facing away from the wall only.
Choose climbers. Evergreen or winter-flowering climbers are preferable in positions which can be seen from the house.
Chimonanthus praecox and jasminum nudiflorum are easy and colourful winter-flowering subjects.
Among the many attractive and summer-flowering climbers are Actinidia chensis, Campsis radicans, clematis and hydrangea petiolaris.
